- Demineralized Water SDS (PDF)
What the SDS says, in short
If you are here because a purchasing form or a health and safety officer asked for an SDS, the summary below covers what they are usually looking for. The PDF is the controlled document, so use that as the record.
| Section | Distilled water |
|---|---|
| Product | Distilled water, purified by steam distillation |
| Chemical name | Water |
| CAS number | 7732-18-5 |
| Composition | Water, essentially 100%. No additives |
| Hazard classification | Not classified as hazardous under WHMIS 2015 or GHS |
| Signal word | None |
| Pictograms | None |
| Appearance | Clear, colourless liquid, odourless |
| Flammability | Non flammable |
| Boiling point | 100 °C |
| Freezing point | 0 °C |
| Transport classification | Not regulated as dangerous goods |
Deionized and demineralized water carry the same classification. What differs between the three is the treatment process and the residual conductivity, not the hazard profile.
Why buyers ask for it when the product is water
This comes up often enough to be worth answering. A purchasing system does not know that a product is harmless. It knows that a chemical arriving at a receiving dock needs a document on file, and it will hold the order until it has one.
Under WHMIS 2015, a supplier must provide an SDS for any hazardous product. Water is not a hazardous product, so strictly speaking no SDS is required. In practice, labs, hospitals, dental offices, schools and manufacturers keep a sheet for every input as a matter of policy, and their auditor will ask for it. So we produce one, keep it current, and put it where you can find it without emailing anybody.
The three water types, and which SDS you need
| Type | How it is produced | Typical use |
|---|---|---|
| Distilled | Boiled, then the steam is condensed | Autoclaves, CPAP, labs, humidifiers, batteries |
| Deionized | Ion exchange resin | Rinse water, cooling systems, process water |
| Demineralized | Mineral removal, ozone treated | Industrial and general process use |
If you are unsure which one your specification calls for, send us the spec or call 905-670-7400. We produce all three at our own plant in Mississauga, so we have no reason to steer you toward one.
Test data behind the sheets
The SDS describes the hazard profile. It is not a certificate of analysis, and buyers often need both.
Every lot is tested for microbiology, and a comprehensive chemistry screen is run annually by an independent accredited laboratory. Our distilled water tests between 0 and 5 parts per million total dissolved solids. The lab analysis page has the actual results, the laboratory name and the sample certificates.
If you need a certificate of analysis for a specific lot, quote the date code on the bottle and email order@puretap.ca. We can pull it.
Common questions
Is distilled water a WHMIS controlled product?
No. It is not classified as hazardous under WHMIS 2015 or GHS. No pictogram, no signal word, no hazard statements.
Do you have an MSDS rather than an SDS?
MSDS is the older term. Canada moved to the 16 section SDS format under WHMIS 2015, which is what these documents are. If a form asks for an MSDS, the SDS is what it wants.
Is the SDS current?
Yes, and it carries a revision number so you can check what you have on file against what is here. If your auditor needs a signed or dated copy on letterhead, email us and we will send one.
Do I need an account to download it?
No. Click the link. We do not gate safety documents behind a form.
Can you supply an SDS for a private label run?
Yes. Custom and private label water carries the same classification, and we will issue the sheet under the run.
What about your other products?
For softener salt or anything else in the catalogue, email order@puretap.ca with the product and we will send the current sheet.
