Best Containers for Emergency Water Storage: What Actually Works

If you are putting together a 72-hour water supply for your household, the container you use matters as much as the water itself. The wrong container can make stored water taste off, absorb chemicals from the plastic, or require full replacement every few years. Here is a practical look at what works and what does not.

What to avoid

Most regular plastic containers are not ideal for long-term water storage. Thin plastic bottles (the kind in a flat of water from a grocery store) were not designed to sit for months. Over time, especially in warmer storage conditions, low-density plastic can leach small amounts of phthalates and other compounds into the water. Sunlight degrades plastic further. If you are relying on a case of grocery-store water tucked in a closet, it is worth knowing that the manufacturer does not guarantee taste or safety beyond the printed best-before date.

Milk jugs should not be used for water storage at all. They are porous, very difficult to sanitize fully, and can harbour bacteria even after cleaning.

What actually works for home storage

Heavy-duty food-grade plastic jugs (5 gallon / 18.9 L)

A standard 18-litre water jug made from thick food-grade polycarbonate or PET holds up well over time if stored away from heat and light. These are the same jugs used in office water dispensers. The material is thicker and more stable than single-use bottles. Downside: plastic is still plastic, and if the jug develops any cracks or clouding over time, it should be replaced.

Glass bottles

Glass is the best material for long-term water storage, full stop. It does not leach anything into the water, does not absorb odours, and does not degrade over time. Distilled water in a clean glass bottle will taste exactly the same a year later as it did the day it was filled.

Our 3 gallon Italian glass bottles are a practical option for households that want a permanent storage solution. Each holds 11.3 litres. You buy the bottle once for $49 and own it. Refills are $15.95 per bottle for distilled or spring water, available for pickup at 950 Verbena Road in Mississauga or delivered to your door. Glass bottles are in stock now.

Stainless steel

Stainless steel is durable and does not leach chemicals, but it is heavier and more expensive per litre stored. It is a good choice for smaller volumes (a large water bottle or a 4-litre canteen), but for a full household emergency supply the cost adds up quickly. Also, stainless steel is not transparent, so you cannot easily inspect the water inside.

What water to put in your containers

The container is only part of the equation. What you store inside matters too. Tap water treated with chlorine will last about six months before the chlorine dissipates and bacteria can grow. After that, it should be replaced or treated again.

Distilled water stores longer because there is nothing in it to support bacterial growth. It is the cleanest starting point for emergency storage and works well in both glass and high-quality plastic containers. If you want water that stays stable without any rotation schedule, distilled in glass is the straightforward answer.

The simple math

The Government of Canada recommends four litres per person per day. For a 72-hour supply for a family of four, you need 48 litres. Three of our glass bottles (33.9 litres) covers a family of three for three days. Four bottles (45.2 litres) gets a family of four close to a full supply. Five bottles puts you well over the recommended minimum with a small buffer.
