How to tell it is the gasket

Water or steam escaping at the seam where the lid meets the boiling tank, drips running down the outside, or a small puddle appearing under the machine during a cycle. A tired gasket goes hard and flat and stops sealing under pressure.

While you are in there. The O ring under the boiling tank knob hardens on the same timeline and causes an almost identical drip. Both are inexpensive. Doing them together saves opening the machine twice.

Check the sealing face is clean and free of scale before fitting the new gasket. Scale on the rim will stop a perfectly good gasket from sealing, and people replace the gasket twice before working that out.
