How to tell it is the fan motor

Two symptoms. Either the machine has become loud, grinding or rattling rather than the usual hum, or it keeps tripping the thermal overload because the condenser is not getting the airflow it needs.

Check the cheaper part first. A cracked or unbalanced fan blade makes a very similar noise and costs a fraction of the motor. Look at the blade before you condemn the bearing. If the blade is sound and it still grinds, or the fan turns slowly or not at all, the motor has gone.

A failed fan is worth fixing quickly. Without airflow the machine runs hot, and running hot is what shortens the life of the element.
