Solar salt made the slow way, by letting sun and wind evaporate sea water until what is left is close to pure sodium chloride. Around 99.6%. It dissolves cleanly, it leaves very little behind in the brine tank, and it is the salt we sell most of because it is the one that causes the fewest problems.

We stock it by the bag at our Mississauga plant and deliver it across the GTA on our own trucks. If you go through salt steadily, buy it by the pallet instead. The arithmetic is further down and it is not close.

A pallet works out to $11.50 a bag delivered. Buying the same 56 bags a few at a time can cost you close to $200 more for identical salt. If you manage a building, a gym, a salon or a laundromat, the pallet is the obvious buy and it means nobody is making a salt run every second week.

How much salt you will actually use

A typical GTA household on municipal water goes through a 20 kg bag every four to eight weeks. It depends on how hard your water is, how many people are in the house, and how your softener is set. Tap water across most of the GTA runs 120 to 250 mg/L of calcium and magnesium, which is hard by any standard, so most homes here sit at the heavier end of that range.

The simple check: look in the brine tank once a month. If the salt is below the halfway mark, or you can see water sitting on top of it, add a bag.

Rock salt is mined rather than evaporated, so it arrives with the insoluble material still in it. That material has to go somewhere, and where it goes is the bottom of your brine tank. Solar salt costs a little more and saves you the job.

Pickup and delivery

Pickup is free at 950 Verbena Road, Mississauga, Monday to Friday, 8:00 to 15:30. We deliver bags and pallets across the GTA on our own trucks, which is why we can quote it honestly rather than passing you to a carrier. Outside the GTA, salt travels well enough that it is worth asking for a number.

Common questions

Is solar salt better than rock salt?
Yes, for most people. It is higher purity, it dissolves more cleanly and it leaves far less residue in the brine tank. Rock salt is cheaper per bag and you spend the difference cleaning the tank out.

How often do I add salt?
Most GTA homes refill every four to eight weeks. Check the brine tank once a month and top it up when the salt drops below halfway.

Can I mix solar salt with pellets?
You can, and nothing bad happens. It is simpler to stay with one type so the tank behaves predictably.

What does a pallet cost?
A pallet of 56 bags is $644, which is $11.50 a bag delivered. That is the cheapest way to buy salt from us and it is available to households, not only businesses.

Do you deliver outside the GTA?
We quote it. Salt is dense, so unlike empty bottles it freights economically and we can often be competitive well past our own delivery radius.
