Is Distilled Water Safe for Baby Formula? What Every Parent Should Know

When it comes to preparing baby formula, every ingredient matters, including the water. Many pediatricians and formula manufacturers recommend using distilled water, and for good reason. Tap water can contain minerals, chlorine, fluoride, and trace contaminants that may not be suitable for your newborn’s developing system.

Why Pediatricians Recommend Distilled Water for Formula

Infant formula is carefully designed with precise levels of minerals and nutrients. When you mix formula with tap water that already contains dissolved minerals, fluoride, and other additives, you can inadvertently alter the formula’s intended nutritional balance. Distilled water, with its 0 to 5 PPM total dissolved solids, provides a clean slate that lets the formula work exactly as designed.

Health Canada advises that infants under six months should not consume water with high fluoride levels, as excessive fluoride can cause dental fluorosis, white spots or streaks on developing teeth. Many municipal water systems in the GTA add fluoride to tap water at levels that, while safe for adults, may be too much for infants consuming formula as their primary food source.

The Risks of Using Tap Water for Baby Formula

Beyond fluoride, tap water can contain a range of substances that parents may want to avoid for their babies. Chlorine and chloramine are added as disinfectants but can affect taste and may irritate sensitive digestive systems. Lead from aging pipes, a documented issue in older GTA homes and even some Ontario schools, poses serious developmental risks to infants. Trace pharmaceuticals, microplastics, and agricultural runoff have all been detected in municipal water supplies across Canada.

Boiling tap water, while it kills bacteria, actually concentrates mineral content and does nothing to remove lead or chemical contaminants. This is why boiling alone is not a substitute for using distilled water.

Distilled vs. Other Water Types for Formula

Not all bottled water is the same. Spring water contains naturally occurring minerals that can vary from bottle to bottle. Filtered water depends entirely on the quality and maintenance of the filter, a worn-out filter may not remove contaminants effectively. Reverse osmosis water is generally low in minerals but may still contain trace contaminants depending on membrane quality.

Distilled water is the only type that has been heated to steam and recondensed, ensuring virtually all impurities, organic and inorganic, are removed. It is the most consistent, purest option available for mixing with infant formula.

Convenience for New Parents

New parents have enough to worry about without questioning whether their water is safe. Having a supply of Puretap 18-litre distilled water on hand means you always have pure, ready-to-use water for formula preparation, day or night.
