Italian Glass Water Carboys: Why Puretap Sourced From Vetri Speciali

New at Puretap: food-safe Italian glass water carboys, and a distilled water refill service to match. This is the glass option several customers have asked us for over the years. Our BPA-free plastic bottles still deliver on the truck across the GTA, so nothing changes there. This is simply the alternative for those who wanted glass.

The short version

Puretap has imported a shipment of premium glass water carboys from Vetri Speciali in Ormelle, Italy. Two sizes, both certified food-safe flint glass, both with the classic fascetta neck finish that fits standard closures and, on the 5-gallon, standard 55 mm water-cooler dispensers. Why glass, when the plastic bottles are already BPA-free?

Fair question. Our plastic bottles are food-safe, BPA-free, and do the water-storage job perfectly well. Over the years, though, several customers have asked us for a glass alternative. Sometimes it is the look on a kitchen counter. Sometimes it is the feel of a heavier container. Sometimes it is simply the personal preference of a customer who has always used glass. So we sourced one from Italy. Both formats are on the menu now, and neither is a knock on the other.

Why Italian glass, specifically

Not all glass containers are the same. When we started sourcing options for a durable glass carboy that could handle a full water-cycle life of refill, reuse, refill again, we looked at manufacturers from across Europe, North America, and Asia. Italy came out ahead for four reasons.

1. A long tradition of container glass

Italy has been making container glass for centuries. From Murano in Venice to the modern container-glass plants of the Veneto region, Italian glassmaking is not a recent adoption. Vetri Speciali S.p.A., the manufacturer behind our carboys, has been producing container glass for decades and is now part of the Verallia group, one of the largest producers of glass packaging for food and beverages in Europe. When you buy an Italian glass carboy, you are buying from a supply chain that has been refined over generations.

2. EU food-contact standards

Vetri Speciali produces its glass to European Union food-safety standards. Both of our carboys are classified as category-A hydrolytic class III flint glass. Class III means the glass is chemically stable in contact with water and does not leach measurable amounts of soluble material into the contents. That matters because a container that leaches even trace amounts of alkali or heavy metals changes the taste of stored water over time. Our carboys hold water without changing it.

3. Lower risk of heavy metals

Lower-cost glass carboys from certain other regions have, in independent testing, shown trace lead content in the glass composition itself. That is uncommon for high-end European production, and it is one of the reasons Italian and German glass command a premium among refill stores and home bottlers. If you plan to store drinking water in a container for weeks at a time, glass composition matters. Ours is clean.

4. Uniform wall thickness and lower breakage

Vetri Speciali uses modern automated production lines that hold wall-thickness tolerance tightly. Uniform walls mean the carboy handles thermal shock better (going from a cold garage to a warm kitchen, for example), and it resists impact better on the drop test. Cheaper carboys often fail because a thin spot at the shoulder or base gives out under stress. We have not seen that on Vetri glass.

How the refill service works

You buy the carboy once. From then on, you own it, with no returns and no exchanges. When it is empty, there are two ways to get it filled.

Same-day showroom fill

Walk in to 950 Verbena Rd, Mississauga, Monday to Friday between 8:00 am and 3:30 pm. We fill your carboy on the spot with freshly distilled water. Under 10 minutes on a normal day.

Order online, pick up on schedule

Order the refill through the site and we will have it ready in 2 business days. Same $3 or $5 pricing. Same distilled water. The 2-day window lets us slot your fill into our distillation cycle so you are not waiting at the counter.

Why pickup only?

Glass is heavy. A full 5-gallon carboy is roughly 24 kg gross once the water is in it, and courier fragile-handling starts eating the margin fast. Distilled water at $3 to $5 for gallons of it only works economically if we skip the shipping step. Pickup keeps the price honest. If you would rather have distilled water delivered, our plastic 4 L case and 18 L bottle still ride the truck across the GTA. Same water, different container.

You own the carboy. No returns.

Once your carboy leaves our showroom or ships, it is yours to keep. We do not accept carboy returns after fulfillment. If your circumstances change and you want to step out of the glass loop, you can always come back to our BPA-free plastic bottles, and hang on to the carboy for another use like home brewing, kombucha, wine and cider, or oil decanting.

The math on switching to glass

Say a household goes through a 5-gallon of distilled water every three weeks for humidifier top-ups, coffee, iron, and houseplants. Twelve fills a year.

• Renewed carboy route: $35 for the pre-loved 5-gallon (no first-refill freebie on this SKU) then 12 refills at $5 = $60. Year one: $95. Every year after: $60.
• New carboy route: $59 for the 5-gallon (first refill free), then 11 refills at $5 = $55. Year one: $114. Every year after: $60.

The carboy pays itself back in year one on either path, and everything after is essentially just the water.
